When the biofilm (plaque) has created significant damage around the teeth (bone craters), surgery can regenerate some of the lost bone. The gingiva is peeled around the teeth, the surface of the teeth disinfected, then a membrane is inserted between the gingiva and the tooth to protect a bone substitute material that over time will turn into natural bone.
